After winning $ 300 million in state funds for expansion of pre-kindergarten, Mayor Bill de Blasio made a surprise appearance Wednesday at a breakfast of city business leaders.
The mayor dropped in at the Association for a Better New York, the same group he spoke to 18 months prior, about the importance of expanding education for those just starting school.
At that time, he demanded a tax hike on those earning $ 500,000 or more a year, which would have affected people in the room.
He did not win that funding but says his administration and the city are big winners nonetheless in the new state budget.
“We have to reach every child. And I’m committed to reaching every child in this city, and by the way, they may be in the traditional public schools, that’s where most of the kids we educate are. They may be in charter schools, they may be in religious schools. We have to reach all of them, they are our future, they are our destiny. They will be the economy of the future of this city,” De Blasio said.
Also speaking Wednesday was the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development.
Alicia Glen announced the city is changing its job training program.
She says, as it stands, it is not doing enough to train for technology-related jobs.
