A neighborly dispute in Chicago led to gunfire and an 86-year-old man reportedly dead at the hands of an off-duty cop.

A total of three people were shot on the city’s South Side when a Friday afternoon argument led to one elderly homeowner fetching a shotgun and shooting his neighbor’s wife, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Joe Huff, 86, was pronounced dead at the scene while his 90-year-old wife, who was also shot by the defending officer, was hospitalized.

Sources told the Tribune that the fight started when the older woman threw dirt at her neighbor, resulting in the woman’s husband coming outside and getting struck with a rake.

The older woman allegedly told her husband, “go into the house and get that thing,” before he returned with a shotgun and fired it at both the off-duty officer and his wife.

With the officer’s wife wounded, he returned fire, fatally shooting Huff.

Huff’s wife then went to grab her husband’s gun while allegedly ignoring the officer’s warning to stop. That provocation led to him shooting her too.

“He’s going to defend his wife and he’s going to defend his life,” Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, told the Tribune of the officer’s decision to open fire.

At the bloody scene, mortified family and neighbors of both couples said both families had been at each other’s’ throats for years.

Huff’s son, Darren Huff, told the Tribune that his father’s wife was grazed in the shooting. Huff’s granddaughter, sobbing, said he was a war vet who had served in the Army.
