Coffey Park is about to get a multimillion dollar facelift.

The Parks Department has secured $ 2.3 million to spruce up the run-down, eight-acre Red Hook green space just steps from one of the city’s largest public housing projects.

“Coffey Park functions on many levels as a town square — a central, open, civic space where Red Hook comes together,” said Community Board 6 District Manager Craig Hammerman, who said the board had been pushing for the fixes at the Verona St. park for at least the past decade.

“Because this project is long overdue that simply heightens the community’s expectations further,” added Hammerman of the project, just across the street from the Red Hook Houses.

The facelift will include reconstruction of the paths in the northern half of the park, a reconfiguration of the central plaza and the construction of a new barbecue area with grills and picnic tables, officials told The News.

The installation of two new drinking fountains and a spruce up of existing gardens is also included, officials said.

“I’m very happy to hear this,” said Dwight St. resident Desmond Hill, 24. “I have many memories in that park.”

The project, which will begin later this month and finish early next year, was funded through the city and the state.
