Bratton Unveils New NYPD Training Procedures at Council Hearing

Police Commissioner William Bratton testified before the City Council concerning changes to NYPD training procedures.

The commissioner and other police officials were questioned by the Council’s Committee on Public Safety. The hearing by the Council’s Committee on Public Safety follows the death of Eric Garner on Staten Island in July.

The incident led to increased scrutiny of the NYPD over what some civil rights leaders call aggressive police tactics.

At the hearing Monday, Bratton reported a department-wide retraining of officers in the use of force, effective problem solving, and community relations is in the works.

That will include annual refresher courses moving forward.

Bratton says he’s confident the new guidelines can bring about a new unity between police and communities.

He also said the estimated cost of retraining officers would be between $ 25 and 30 million.
