After keeping a low profile on primary night, Governor Andrew Cuomo kicked off the general election campaign at a rally in Buffalo, and for the first time, Cuomo took direct aim at his Republican opponent. NY1′s Zack Fink filed the following report.
After choosing to ignore his primary opponent, Zephyr Teachout, Governor Andrew Cuomo is taking a different tack for the upcoming general election, going after his Republican foe right out of the gate.
“Our opponent runs Westchester County,” Cuomo said. “Westchester County, you need to know one thing about Westchester County. The highest property taxes in the United States of America.”
The governor positioned the governor’s race a choice between the moderate, middle-of-the-road ticket with himself and running mate Kathy Hochul, and what he called ultra-conservatives who don’t support gay marriage or abortion rights.
He also brushed off the unexpectedly high vote margin achieved by Teachout on Tuesday night.
“If I get to govern responsibly and do the right thing, and not the political thing, for the people of this state, and win by 60 percent? I will make that deal all day long,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo blamed low turnout for the less-than-overwhelming victory he achieved in the primary.
“I don’t think anyone thought I had a serious race, so I don’t think there was any great incentive for somebody who supported me to take a break in their day and go out and vote.”
Hochul was less defiant at the rally than she was primary night, when she referred to herself as the “underdog” in the lieutenant governor primary contest.
Playing to the western New York audience, she hit home the Cuomo-Hochul message that they are going to invest heavily in Buffalo and Erie County.
“You’ve also helped me be on a journey to become the first lieutenant governor from the city of Buffalo since 1879. Long time ago, folks!” she said.
Cuomo said he spoke to Teachout on the phone on primary night. He said they had a short, uneventful conversation, but they both agreed to talk to one another again.
