The Department of Correction hired a high-profile management consulting firm to oversee a full policy review at Rikers Island.
The move follows a report last month by the U.S. Attorney’s Office slamming the city’s jail for what they called a “deep-seated culture of violence” against adolescent inmates.
Two adult inmates also died after being left in overheated cells at Rikers in the past year.
In a letter to officers about the review, Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte wrote: “The review by CUNY’s Institute for State and Local Governance and McKinsey and Company will produce recommendations for immediate action as well as an actionable plan for long-term, systemic change…”
“…It will be a foundation for a jail system that is safer for staff and inmates alike, more humane, and that produces better outcomes for inmates.”
