Medical Examiner: Death of Rikers Prisoner Found in Overheated Cell an Accident

The medical examiner has ruled the death of a prisoner found in an overheated cell on Rikers Island an accident.

Officials say 56-year-old Jerome Murdough died of an elevated body temperature or hyperthermia.

They say Murdough was found on February 15 in a 101-degree jail cell.

The homeless mentally ill veteran was supposed to be under observation, but jail officials say no one had checked on him for hours.

The medical examiner also says the medicine he was taking to treat a mood disorder and schizophrenia contributed to his death.
