The stadium search for the city’s new Major League Soccer team has moved out of the Bronx and back into Queens.
The New York City Football Club is set to begin playing at Yankee Stadium next year. The team had hopes of constructing their own stadium in the South Bronx as a permanent home, but NY1 has learned they had trouble acquiring the necessary land for the project, and will now be considering sites in other boroughs.
An earlier potential stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park was shut down by strong community opposition.
Capital New York reports the team’s owners — which include the Yankees — are looking into Queens once again, with a site near Aqueduct Racetrack targeted for a potential soccer arena.
The stadium would lie in the district of Senator Joseph Addabbo, who says he has not seen a specific proposal, and does not think there would be a large enough space for a full size facility.
In a statement, a spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio said, “The administration is committed to working with the City Council and the New York City Football Club to identify an appropriate site in New York City to host a world class soccer stadium.”
