Off-Duty State Narcotics Officer Charged in UWS Shooting

An off-duty state narcotics officer is under arrest for allegedly shooting two people Friday night in Manhattan.

Investigators say Victor Zambrano, 49, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and assault.

Police say it all happened just after 9 p.m. near Amsterdam Avenue and 84th Street.

Witnesses say the officer was arguing with two people just before shots rang out.

Published reports say he was drinking with friends and let one of them hold his gun. When the friend would not give it back, a struggle reportedly broke out and the weapon went off.

“We heard, like, a pop first, and then, we saw police outside with their guns drawn, and then everybody started moving towards the middle of the bar, just getting down on the ground because you’re sort of thinking of a stray bullet, you don’t want that anywhere near you,” said one person at the scene.

“I’ve lived here 30-something years, and I’ve never been this close to this kind of action on the West Side, even in the old days, when it was a little more dangerous,” said another.

Police say a 42-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital.

It is unclear who the second victim is.

Both are expected to recover.

NYPD statistics show this is the first shooting in the area so far this year.
