“Pride of Midtown” Remembers 15 Lost at WTC Site

A Midtown firehouse held its own ceremony Thursday for the 15 members it lost on September 11, 2001. NY1′s Rocco Vertuccio filed the following report.

Thirteen years later, this day doesn’t get any easier for the families of one Midtown firehouse.

“Feels like it’s the first time we’re coming to the firehouse and feeling the love and support that they give but it doesn’t bring him back,” said Lauren Ragaglia, whose brother was killed in the September 11th attacks.

Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 – the Pride of Midtown – was one of the hardest hit on September 11, 2001. Fifteen men who responded to the World Trade Center that day to save lives lost their own.

Every year, the names of those lost heroes are read out loud during a ceremony in a memorial park across the street from the firehouse.

“I think about him every single day. He’s with me in my heart. I wear this every day this is Christopher’s picture,” said Maureen Santora, whose 23-year-old son Christopher was one of the firefighters killed. “Coming here is very special because this is an extended family.”

The sons and some siblings of some of the firefighters from the firehouse are now firefighters themselves . They joined the FDNY because of 911.

“He’s my inspiration I get to look at his picture everyday I just hope to be half the fireman he was,” said Steven Ragaglia, whose brother was killed in the September 11th attacks.

Steven Ragaglia was only 10-years-old when his brother Lenny died. Now, he is a firefighter at Engine 54.

“I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else I wanted to do exactly as he did,” he said.

New Yorkers are reminded to never forget that day and the families couldn’t even if they wanted to. So, they remember with pride, honor and tears.
