SI Football Player Remembered at Funeral Service

Friends and family of the Curtis High School football player who died earlier this month gathered for a funeral service Saturday morning.

The service was held at Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Church in West Brighton.

Miles Kirkland-Thomas, 16, collapsed during practice back on September 1.

Police say the 6’2″ tall, 300 pound athlete went into cardiac arrest.

Teammates say Kirkland wanted to play in college and remember him as a team leader.

“He always showed by example, you know? He always had the right form, the right technique and he was always able to show it to all of us,” said Teammate Matt Reilly.

“He just loved being on the field and I guess it’s the best thing that he died doing what he loved doing,” said Teammate Patrick Newman.

“He was one of the first people I spoke to. At first, he was so big I thought he was going to be mean or something but he was like the sweetest guy I ever met. He was always such a positive person, making sure I went to class and making sure I was good. Like he was just great,” said Aurelia Baez, a friend of Kirkland-Thomas.

The school has put Kirkland’s number on the football field and his teammates say they are dedicating the rest of the season to his memory.

Kirkland-Thomas will be buried Monday at Silver Mount Cemetery.
