Thousands of runners took part Sunday in an 18-mile tuneup run in Central Park to prepare for the 44th annual New York City Marathon.
Five thousand dedicated runners lapped around Central Park at around 7 a.m.
Organizers said they expect nearly 50,000 runners to take place in the 26.2 mile New York City Marathon on November 2.
Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of the New York Road Runners, said the race gives marathoners a boost of energy as they enter the home stretch of their training.
“These runners have been at this now for many many weeks, OK. We’ve got four or five weeks to go, and 18 miles, they come out and they’re fully supported,” Wittenberg said. “They’ve got music. They’ve got other runners. It’s a real kind of team-building because you’re out there with other people who are going to run. And for many of these people, they haven’t run 18 miles before, and they maybe weren’t even runners a few years ago.”
