Workers, Politicians March in Labor Day Parade

Thousands of workers took to the streets Saturday for the annual Labor Day parade is in midtown.

It’s a city tradition over a 125 years old.

Teamsters, transit workers and teachers all walked up 5th avenue today.

Politicians showed their support too.

Governor Andrew Cuomo was there with the head of the Transport Workers union. His Democratic Primary challenger Zephyr Teachout walked as well.

They’ll face off in a primary election on Tuesday.

Public advocate Letitia James says it’s important to remember how vital the labor movement is.

“The middle class and union movement are inextricably tied to one another. And when we grow the union movement, we increase and expand the middle class. And the union movement, as we know, in this nation and this city, is under attack,” James said.

“We’re the people that organized labor. The people that brought you the weekend, the eight-hour day, overtime, healthcare, disability insurance, worker’s compensation,” said Joe Rivierzo of Local 360.

St. Patricks Cathedral hosted a special service this morning before the parade.
