Man who shot NYPD cop dies after surgery

The ex-con who had a gun battle with police early last week died from complications after surgery on Saturday, police said.

Naim Owens, 22, grazed officer John Hirschberger in the left thigh while fleeing cops on Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 2:30 a.m. August 31, according to police.

During the pursuit, cops shot Owens once in the upper back, and he was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he suffered complications during surgery and died from internal bleeding on Saturday, the sources said.

Hirschberger, who has less than one year on the job, was also rushed to Kings County for the graze wound and later released, cops said.

Owens had 14 prior arrests including gun possession, criminal possession of a disguised firearm, possession of marijuana, and criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, cops said. Ten of those priors were sealed.

Owens was on parole just a year ago after he served three years in state prison for grand larceny and criminal possession of a weapon, according to public record.

He was charged with attempted murder, assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, criminal possession of a loaded weapon and reckless endangerment in his final run in with the law, cops said.
