Charity lost money because of ‘bumbling’ planner: lawsuit

A Manhattan nonprofit claims its annual fund-raiser was so mismanaged, it actually lost money, according to a lawsuit.

Save the Date, a Tribeca event planner, couldn’t even get the guests to their seats properly during the National Urban Technology Center’s June gala, and included so much misinformation in the live and silent auctions that the charity ended up losing cash or shelling out dough to make up for the mistakes, it charges in a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.

An autographed picture of Yankee legend Derek Jeter, worth $ 700, was lost or stolen; minimum bids on a Nitro Bike and vacation packages were set incorrectly; and Save the Date incorrectly listed a Turks & Caicos vacation package as including a $ 1,000 Jet Blue gift card, forcing the center to pay out an extra grand to the winner, the center alleges in court papers.

The gala resulted in the “lowest auction revenue ever achieved by the Technology Center, and a huge loss of goodwill from the Technology Center’s donor base,” according to the lawsuit filed against Save the Date.

The center, whose mission is to “transform lives through the power of technology,” says it paid Save the Date $ 17,500 to run the event and is seeking unspecified damages.

Save the Date did not return a call for comment.
