The city’s only Ebola patient is declared free of the virus and has been released from the hospital.
Dr. Craig Spencer was diagnosed on October 23, days after returning from Guinea.
The 33-year-old physician had been in the West African nation helping to fight the outbreak.
He spent 19 days in isolation at Bellevue Hospital.
Dr. Spencer’s condition was upgraded to stable last week and he felt well enough to exercise and play the banjo.
Last night, Mayor Bill de Blasio said off-camera that he is looking forward to greeting him as he leaves.
“We are thrilled. Dr. Spencer, I’ve said many times, he’s a real hero. This is a guy who went toward danger, went to where the need was greatest in the whole world. He’s suffered a lot these last few weeks but he’s come back really strong,” the mayor said.
Dr. Spencer’s fiancee and two of his friends were initially quarantined but have been released.
Health officials are still keeping a close eye on them.
Residents who live near the physician in upper Manhattan say they are happy about his return.
“We feel comfortable because the doctor comes out so everything is fine so i think that disease is under control thanks God,” said one neighborhood resident.
“I’m sure they’re taking care to make sure it’s time for him to come home. I’m sure he’s had a really hard time and I’m glad to hear he’s well enough for that to happen. I think our building’s been through a lot and I’m sure they’ve been through more,” said another neighborhood resident.
With Dr. Spencer’s recovery, there are no Ebola patients currently under treatment in the U.S.
