Lawmakers Look To Ban Handheld Devices For Cyclists

The Council wants cyclists to put the breaks on using handheld electronics while peddling around the city.

The bill being introduced by Council members Mark Treyger and Ydanis Rodriguez would make it illegal for people to use a handheld device while on the go.

Similar to the car ban, the bill would stop people from making calls, texting or surfing the Internet unless they are pulled over, or using a hands free device.

If passed, first time offenders could take a bicycle safety course in lieu of a fine, as long as no one was hurt and no property was damaged.

A similar ban is already on the books in Chicago.
