Several City Council members are introducing a bill in the wake of Eric Garner’s death that would make chokeholds illegal.
The lawmakers acknowledge that the move has been banned by the New York City Police Department for more than 20 years but say cops still use it too often.
The new bill would make it a misdemeanor to use a chokehold.
In their press release, lawmakers specifically reference Garner, who died during an arrest on Staten Island this summer.
The medical examiner determined a chokehold was the cause of death.
