City Reviews Lawsuit of Student Burned in Chemistry Class

The city says it is reviewing a lawsuit filed on behalf of a student burned in a high school chemistry experiment.

The parents of 16-year-old Alonso Yanes are suing because of injuries he suffered at Beacon High School in January.

The family’s lawyer couldn’t share how much money the suit is asking for, but a notice of claim filed earlier this year put the number at $ 27 million.

Yanes was one of two students burned when a teacher performed a controversial experiment that involved setting different chemical mixtures on fire to show the different colors of the flames.

The Department of Education has since banned the experiment in all of its schools.
