Jack Welch’s rebuke of Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña isn’t sitting well with Mayor de Blasio, who fired back Wednesday that the former GE chairman should “stick to light bulbs” and not offer advice on education.
“The chancellor came under some criticism from someone who last I checked was not an educator: Jack Welch,” de Blasio said during a press conference with Fariña on pre-K enrollment.
“I would say to Jack Welch he should stick to light bulbs.”
Welch dismissed Fariña’s choices for new school superintendents as “flunkies” and “hacks” in an interview with CNBC Monday after a Post review found many led failing schools as principals.
“When you have a philosophy of putting people in place without a meritocracy, without differentiation, you get bad performance,” said Welch.
“[In] that system of no meritocracy, of no differentiation, we’re all equal, you don’t get performance. You can’t do it. You just can’t do it,” he added.
De Blasio defended the chancellor’s hiring choices.
“She chose people who had tremendous history with turning around troubled schools, folks who dealt with troubled schools,” the mayor said.
A spokeswoman for Welch said he was in meetings and unable to immediately comment.
