Skateboarder dead in tragic accident

A skateboarder hitching a ride on the back of a truck in Queens died when he lost control and slipped underneath the rear wheels around 11:40 a.m.

The victim, believed to be in his 20’s was holding onto a white 2005 GMC box truck on 47 Avenue between 32 Pl and 33 Street in Sunnyside when he fell underneath the vehicle, police sources said.

The young man was holding onto the door handle of the cargo truck when a witness said he saw the driver look in his rear-view mirror and speed up. “I know he probably saw the guy. He sped up about five miles per hour either to get the kid to let go or to give him a faster ride,” said Jadon Thompson, 42.

He lost footing on his skateboard and appeared to be flying behind the truck, the witness said.

“I saw fear in his face and then he went under,” said Thompson. The truck driver didn’t stop immediately but returned to the scene twenty minutes later.

The man who was a just eleven blocks from his house, was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he died shortly after.

The NYPD is investigating.
