Cops fatally shoot armed thief in ATM heist

Cops fatally shot an armed robber after he held up a man outside at a Bronx ATM, cops said.

The 24-year-old man was taking money out of a Chase Bank ATM on Burnside and Jerome Avenues in University Heights when the crook came up to him and demanded cash, police said.

The thief fled and the victim flagged a police car, cops said.

They canvassed the area and the victim was able to point out the suspect, police said.

Cops then chased the gun-toting man to Davidson Avenue where cops struggled with him, police sources said. That’s when one officer shot at the man, striking him twice in the chest, sources said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the suspect fired at police first, cops said.

The thief was transported to St. Barnabas where he was pronounced dead a short time later, cops said.

Police recovered a loaded 380 caliber handgun from the scene. The man’s name is pending proper family notification, police said.
