Anthrax scare at Queens Criminal Court after Tylenol ‘joke’

Anderson, Willie

There was an Anthrax scare at Queens Criminal Court after baby Tylenol that one assistant district attorney sent to another as a ‘joke’ was crushed in the mail.

There’s no cure for stupidity.

A boneheaded prank by an assistant district attorney against a fellow prosecutor set off an Anthrax panic in Queens Criminal Court Tuesday, law enforcement sources said.

The mailroom in the courthouse on Queens Blvd. was evacuated and seven people were about to be treated for exposure to a potentially toxic substance around noon when a suspicious looking powder in an envelope mailed to an ADA was identified as cold medicine, sources said.

The medicine was sent to the prosecutor from another attorney in the same office, sources said.

“The assistant district attorney who received the letter had been complaining that he had cold and flu symptoms,” said a law enforcement source. “He was whining and complaining about it for awhile. The other ADA sent him baby Tylenol as a joke.”

Sources said the Tylenol ended up getting pulverized when it was mailed and was practically in powder form when it arrived at the Queens District Attorney’s office.

A mail room clerk at the district attorney’s office didn’t know what to make of it and walked it over to the court mail room so workers there could check it out, a source said.

When workers in the courthouse mailroom couldn’t identify it, they called 911.

The courthouse wasn’t evacuated, but cops cleared the mailroom as a precaution as they inspected the letter, officials said.

Paramedics were also called in to evaluate seven mail room employees who had handled the letter.

A spokeswoman for Queens DA Richard Brown wouldn’t say if the prosecutor who mailed the cold medicine — who was not named — would be reprimanded.

“We believe that the matter has been resolved and it is being treated as a non-suspicious package,” the spokeswoman said.
