Lights along many Belt Pkwy. bridges such as the under construction span over the Paerdegat Basin, are out. Locals see a disaster in the making.
A major traffic disaster is waiting to happen along the Belt Pkwy.
Roughly 150 street lamps remain without power in the three-mile stretch between Flatbush Ave. and Knapp St., a relic of Hurricane Sandy, which hit 11 months ago.
“Why must we wait before someone has to die on this stretch,” said one man who uses the highway three times a week, but did not wish to be identified.
The lights are out even as the Department of Transportation continues to fix seven damaged bridges along the Belt Pkwy. — and local leaders see a deadly combination.
“We were promised emergency lighting five months ago and are distressed to hear that they are still working on it,” said Councilman Lew Fidler (D-Marine Park). “We must have different definitions of the word ‘emergency.’”
An official with the local community board cut the city some slack, saying the scale of the Sandy damage and the resulting repair work meant that such delays were inevitable.
“It’s such a huge project and the repair work is ongoing,” said Theresa Scavo, chairwoman of Community Board 15. “The DOT pushed back the date of the repair work, but “What can we do? Except for a couple of people, there haven’t been complaints in the neighborhood about it.”
The Department of Transportation declined to comment about the delay, but a spokesman said temporary lights would be installed within weeks.
