After Saturday’s deadly attack inside an upscale mall in Kenya, security has stepped up in New York City.
The New York Police Department says there is no specific threat to the five boroughs, but critical response vehicles and heavily armed Hercules teams have been redeployed as a precaution.
The death toll stands at at least 59 at the mall in Nairobi.
The hostages are still inside, and there are reports of gunfire from Sunday morning.
The Associated Press says at least two wounded Kenyan soldiers have been carried out.
It’s unclear how many hostages are still inside.
Kenyan officials say gunmen stormed the mall Saturday, throwing hand grenades and opening fire with AK-47 assault rifles.
Thirty-nine people were killed and 150 were hurt, including four Americans.
“We have overcome terrorist attacks before. In fact, we have fought courageously and defeated them within and outside our borders. We will defeat them again,” said President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta.
The al-Qaida linked Somali militant group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack on its Twitter feed.
The group says the attacks are retribution for military action by Kenya inside Somalia.
