F-16 fighter jets were deployed Monday to intercept three small planes that wandered into a no-fly zone set up to increase security for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in midtown Manhattan, authorities said.

The three pilots had apparently not been aware of an alert that was issued to warn aviators of the temporary flight-restricted area, which was established by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The three planes were detected during the 4 p.m. hour, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

One of the planes was intercepted in New Jersey airspace, roughly 20 miles away from the city, an FAA official said. That plane was directed to land at Monmouth Executive Airport in Belmar, N.J., according to the official.
It was not immediately clear where the other two planes were intercepted, but officials said both planes were directed to land.
Officials said authorities met with the pilots of all three planes and passengers who were onboard.
Officials added that the violations of the no-fly zone were believed to be accidental and that investigators do not suspect any type of criminal activity was involved.
