Sikh Professor Beaten In Harlem Attack Says Education Key To Stopping Hate Crimes

The Columbia University associate professor who was beaten by a group of teenagers says education is the key to stopping hate crimes.

Dr. Prabhjot Singh says he was attacked by a group of teens Saturday night near the corner of 110th and Malcolm X Boulevard.

According to Dr. Singh, the group grabbed him by his beard and yelled “Get Osama” and “Terrorist.”

A devout Sikh, Dr. Singh says he holds no animosity towards his attackers and says if they were better educated about the world around them, they would not lash out.

“I have a young son, and he looks like an incredibly cute baby, and over the next many years, he’ll increasingly look like a young Sikh man, if he chooses that path. And ultimately, I want to make sure he has the tools of engagement and that he shares that with his friends in school,” Dr. Singh said.

“We’re going need text book manufacturers and school teachers to teach our children the right messages. We’re going to need our government to end discrimination at the airports, to end discrimination at the military,” said Amardeep Singh from the Sikh Coalition.

Singh says he’s grateful that three bystanders stepped in to help or things would have gotten worse.

He suffered a fractured jaw along with cuts and bruises in the attack.

Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.
