Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has defeated former Governor Eliot Spitzer in a closely fought and contentious Democratic primary for city comptroller.
The Associated Press called the primary for Stringer at approximately 11:20 p.m., and Spitzer called Stringer to concede the election at approximately 11:15 p.m.
As of 11:20 p.m., with more than 92 percent of precincts reporting, Stringer had 51.8 percent percent of the vote to Spitzer’s 48.2 percent of vote.
Stringer’s term as Manhattan Borough President began in 2006.
He was considered a likely candidate for mayor before he declared his candidacy for city comptroller in November of 2012.
Spitzer, who resigned the governorship in disgrace in 2008 after being exposed as a client of a prostitution ring, entered the race in July with hopes of a political comeback.
The former state attorney general and so-called “Sheriff of Wall Street” raced to the lead in several early polls – but Stringer subsequently received endorsements from The New York Times, the Daily News and the New York Post.
He also received the backing of much of the Democratic establishment, including Rep. Charles Rangel.
