USPS Calls For Emergency Postage Rate Increase

The cash-strapped United States Postal Service is asking for an emergency increase in postal rates.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says the agency expects to lose $ 6 billion this year.

A special rate hike including an increase in the price of a first class mail single-piece letter from 46 cents to 49 cents could generate $ 2 billion in revenue.

If approved, the proposed changes would go into effect in January.
