The born and bred New Yorker who urged us all to take a Walk On The Wild Side has died.
Guitarist and songwriter Lou Reed, a founding member of The Velvet Underground, died Sunday.
He is credited with playing a hugely influential role in the development of alternative and punk rock, and was known for the poetic honesty of his lyrics.
Reed was a Brooklyn native, born in 1942.
While he didn’t find much fame with The Velvet Underground in the ’60s, the group resonated with later generations and developed a cult following that also extended to Reed’s work as a solo artist.
The band’s collaboration with Andy Warhol is considered a landmark album in the world of music.
Reed underwent a liver transplant in May. His agent says he died of a liver ailment.
Lou Reed was 71.
