As part of an effort to turn two struggling Brooklyn schools around, all staff members will have to re-apply for their jobs.
Teachers and principals who want to stay on at Automotive High School and Boys and Girls High School will have to re-apply and re-interview for their positions.
The two schools are among 94 low-performing institutions that the de Blasio administration calls renewal schools.
Students at these schools could face changes like an extra hour in their day and mental health services.
Officials say the measures give students a fresh start.
“Every teacher and the principal will all have to re-apply for their jobs. They’ll re-apply to a committee that will be composed of parents, teachers, administrators from outside that particular school, and they’ll each be evaluated to see if they can provide the kinds of academic instruction and support that these kids need, and if not, we’ll find somebody else who can,” said First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris. “Because at the end of the day, everybody has to be accountable for providing the quality of education these kids need, and we mean business in making sure that happens.”
The city reached a deal with the teachers’ and principals’ unions in order to make the changes.
The United Federation of Teachers says those that do not want or do not get their jobs back will be reassigned to other Brooklyn schools.
