Brooklyn Prosecutor Loretta Lynch to Be Nominated for Attorney General

The White House says Brooklyn federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch will be nominated to be the next attorney general.

The White House put out a statement Friday night saying President Barack Obama will announce his intent to nominate Lynch Saturday.

The 55-year-old has served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York since 2010.

If confirmed, she would become the first black woman to lead the U.S. Justice Department.

Lynch would replace current Attorney General Eric Holder, who has held the job since 2009.

People with knowledge the president’s plans tell the AP he has decided not to push for Lynch’s confirmation in the lame-duck Senate session.

Instead, he will leave it up to the Republican-controlled Senate next year.
